Australia registers internationally trained doctors through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for examinations and Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia for registration itself. The Standard Pathway runs through two AMC examinations: the CAT MCQ and the Clinical Examination.

Most authorities ask for an English test. Germany asks for German.
One cost point that catches people out. The Medical Board requires payment of both an application fee and a registration fee at the time of application — not the application fee alone. Both figures rose on 1 August 2026.
Competent Authority Pathway
Doctors from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand may qualify through the Competent Authority Pathway, which requires 12 months of supervised practice at 47 weeks full-time equivalent.
