ADC — Dentist Assessment Pathway

The Australian Dental Council (ADC) assessment pathway is the route for internationally trained general dentists whose qualification is not automatically recognised in Australia. It consists of three stages: Initial Assessment, Written Examination, and Practical Examination. Successful completion leads to an ADC Certificate and eligibility to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) via AHPRA.

Pathway Snapshot

The pathway is designed to be completed from abroad for the first two stages: Initial Assessment is online via ADC Connect, and the Written Examination is delivered through Pearson VUE at international test centres. The Practical Examination is held only in Melbourne, Australia. After passing all stages, candidates receive an ADC Certificate and apply for registration.

Complete Journey: Overseas Dental Qualification → ADC Initial Assessment → ADC Written Examination (Pearson VUE) → ADC Practical Examination (Melbourne) → ADC Certificate → DBA/AHPRA General Registration → Practise in Australia.

Initial Assessment

The ADC Initial Assessment determines whether the overseas dental qualification meets the minimum standard for entry to the ADC examination process. Minimum qualification: a dental degree or diploma equivalent to at least 4 years of full-time academic study at a recognised university. There is no mandatory Australian dental degree or bridging programme.
