MPJE / UMPJE & State Licensure
Most U.S. boards require a pharmacy jurisprudence examination in addition to NAPLEX. Historically this was a state-specific Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). NABP has been rolling out the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) so more jurisdictions share a common law exam, while some boards still use a unique MPJE or their own law test. You must follow the rule of the board that will licence you.
Pathway Snapshot
After or alongside NAPLEX eligibility, apply for the MPJE or Uniform MPJE for your target board, sit the computer-based law exam at Pearson VUE, then finish intern hours, background checks, and the board’s licence application.
Complete Journey: Board eligibility → Apply for MPJE or UMPJE → Pearson VUE law exam → Remaining state requirements → Pharmacist licence.

Eligibility
You sit the law exam for a specific board that has found you eligible. Some boards let you take MPJE/UMPJE before NAPLEX; others require a particular sequence. Intern registration may be required first.
California and a small number of other jurisdictions have used their own law examinations instead of MPJE. Always read the board’s current licensure checklist.
MPJE vs Uniform MPJE
The traditional MPJE mixed federal pharmacy law with that state’s statutes and regulations. The Uniform MPJE is designed as a shared federal-plus-model exam so scores can be used more consistently across participating boards.
Participation is board-by-board. If you seek licences in several states, you may still need more than one law exam. NABP publishes which jurisdictions offer UMPJE versus a legacy MPJE.
Exam Details
Both exams are computer-based at Pearson VUE and test federal controlled-substance rules, dispensing and counselling duties, pharmacy operations, and (for state MPJE) that jurisdiction’s Pharmacy Practice Act and board regulations.
Candidate bulletins list item counts, appointment time, and scaled passing standards. Law questions are often scenario-based; memorising a single state’s old handbook is not enough if your board has moved to UMPJE.
What we offer
MCIQ will open MPJE / Uniform MPJE-style practice covering federal pharmacy law and high-yield board scenarios. Register to be notified when prep is available.

After passing NAPLEX and the required law exam, submit intern-hour affidavits, identity and background documents, and any additional board forms. Some states issue a pharmacist licence only after a specified number of intern hours in that state.
Licence transfer or score transfer to a second state is a new application, not an automatic right.
