Egyptian Board — Hepatology & Gastroenterology
أمراض الجهاز الهضمي والكبد (Hepatology & Gastroenterology) is an Egyptian Board specialty, entered directly after the bachelor’s degree and internship. Training is 4 years. Certification runs through the same three-stage structure as the rest of the Egyptian Board: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
Part 1
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Format | Written MCQ |
| Timing | Held regularly, with dates announced per round |
| Eligibility | After at least 3 months of training, plus TOEFL 500 and ICDL Standard |
| Attempts | Maximum 6 |
| Question count and duration | Set by the Scientific Council — not published |
| Pass standard | Standard-setting method; no fixed percentage published |
| Exemption | Arab Board, Master's or Doctorate in the same specialty, applied for within 5 years |
Part 2
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Format | Written. MCQ papers, plus short-essay papers in some specialties (see the specialty page) |
| Timing | Held regularly, with dates announced per round |
| Eligibility | Part 1 pass or exemption · completed training · logbook submitted at least 3 months before the exam · a personal interview · foundation and mandatory course certificates · a proficiency (readiness) report |
| Attempts | Confirm with the Egyptian Health Council |
| Pass standard | Standard-setting method |
The three-month logbook deadline is easy to miss. A candidate who discovers it late loses a sitting.
Part 3
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Format | OSCE · OSPE · Data OSCE · oral exam · short and long cases possible |
| Timing | Held regularly, with dates announced per round |
| Duration | 2–4 days per trainee |
| Station count | Specialty-specific; confirm with the Egyptian Health Council |
| Pass standard | Borderline regression — except where the specialty's cohort is 10 candidates or fewer, in which case the pass mark is a fixed 60% |
In a specialty with a small intake you are not marked against a borderline group — you need 60%.
Structure
The shared Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 blocks apply in full — timings, eligibility, attempts, the five-year exemption rule, the three-month logbook deadline, and the small-cohort 60% rule.
The 2026 admission conditions accept a Master’s in Endemic Diseases, in Hepatology and Gastroenterology, or in Hepatology. A Master’s earns at most one year of training credit.
Liver Transplantation
No liver transplant or transplant hepatology programme is published. The related Egyptian Board programme is surgical: Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery ( جراحة الكبد والبنكرياس والقنوات المرارية), a two-year programme entered after General Surgery or Surgical Oncology.
Written Examination
The final written examination is set out in the Hepatology & Gastroenterology curriculum in the Egyptian Board’s curriculum database. It has four papers of two hours each. For gastroenterology and for hepatology there is one paper of 100 single-best-answer MCQs or extended matching questions, and one short-essay paper. The curriculum publishes the MCQ marks for each area. Clinical disease carries the most: 40 of 100 marks for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and 43 of 100 for cirrhosis and other liver diseases. The curriculum was written for the earlier entry route, after a Master’s or MD in internal medicine, so confirm the current format with the Egyptian Health Council.
