NGDQE — General Dentist Qualifying Examination

The National General Dental Qualifying Examination (NGDQE) is the mandatory qualifying exam for any internationally trained general dentist seeking to practise in Qatar. It is administered by the Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP), Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) — formerly branded the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners (QCHP), a name still in wide informal use and retained in the Prometric scheduling code (SCHQ2). Pass the exam, complete your credentialing and licensing steps, and you are eligible to practise anywhere in Qatar under one national licence.

Pathway Snapshot

The NGDQE is a single computer-based MCQ exam delivered at Prometric centres worldwide. After primary source verification of your credentials (via DataFlow or QuadraBay) and DHP’s eligibility review through the registration portal, you book and sit the exam. A pass, plus completion of DHP’s licensing steps, unlocks registration and practice in Qatar.

Complete Journey: Dental Graduation → Primary Source Verification (DataFlow/QuadraBay) → DHP Evaluation & Portal Application → NGDQE (Prometric) → Temporary or Permanent Licence → Practise in Qatar.

Eligibility

A recognised primary dental qualification (BDS/DDS/DMD or equivalent) from a minimum 5-year undergraduate dental programme, plus a minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience after the undergraduate degree. If the undergraduate programme was a full 5 years, the internship year may be counted toward the 2-year experience requirement; if the programme was shorter than 5 years, the internship is treated as part of education rather than as standalone experience.

Applicants who fall short of the experience requirement, or who have a break in practice, may apply as General Dentist (Supervised) while completing the required period, working under a licensed supervisor. There is no confirmed universal IELTS/OET score requirement for NGDQE candidates. DHP requires only that the applicant be reasonably fluent in Arabic or English or both.

Primary Source Verification

DHP requires Primary Source Verification (PSV) of all education, licensing, and work-experience documents before an application can proceed. Two PSV providers are approved: DataFlow and QuadraBay. Applicants may choose either. As of 1 January 2026, PSV is mandatory for all applicants with no exceptions.

Registration & Licensing Portal

Applications are submitted through DHP’s Registration and Licensing System, commonly referred to as the Sheryan system. The general process is: submit an online evaluation request with required documents (passport, ID, CV, academic certificates, experience certificates, PSV report). DHP’s Registration Section reviews the PSV results and application. On approval, DHP issues a Preliminary Evaluation and CID Letter valid for 6 months. Once eligible, the candidate books and sits the NGDQE through Prometric. After passing, the candidate may apply for a Temporary Licence (valid 6 months, non-renewable) while completing sponsorship/employer requirements, then for the permanent Medical Licence once the sponsoring facility’s licence is confirmed.

Retake Policy

Candidates may sit the NGDQE up to 5 consecutive times, regardless of the interval between attempts. There is no minimum required waiting period between sittings stated in current DHP guidance.

How to Book Your Exam

DataFlow/QuadraBay → DHP Evaluation (Sheryan) → Prometric. Complete Primary Source Verification through DataFlow or QuadraBay. Submit your evaluation application through DHP’s Sheryan portal; DHP reviews credentials and PSV results. On approval, receive access to schedule your Prometric exam. Visit prometric.com, search for exam code SCHQ2 (DHP MOPH Qatar), and select a testing centre — available in Doha and internationally. The exam is offered on demand, with no fixed exam dates. Bring a valid passport to the test centre.

After NGDQE

Passing the NGDQE is not the licence itself. It unlocks the next licensing steps: a Temporary Licence (valid 6 months, non-renewable, requires QID or medical/police-clearance documents) while finalising employer sponsorship, followed by the permanent Medical Licence once the sponsoring healthcare facility’s own licence is confirmed. Renewal requires ongoing CPD compliance.

Fees

The exam fee and cancellation fee schedule below are drawn directly from DHP’s official Circular DHP/2024/10. Other licensing-related costs (PSV, evaluation, registration) are not consolidated in a single official schedule — confirm current figures directly through the DHP Sheryan portal or your chosen PSV provider before payment.

All figures are approximate and based on 2026 public information. Always confirm exact fees on the official portals before payment.
