AMC Standard Pathway — General Licensing

The AMC Standard Pathway is how international medical graduates work toward general registration with the Medical Board of Australia. The AMC certificate itself is not a licence — it is evidence you submit to AHPRA as part of a separate registration application. To earn it, you pass the AMC Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) MCQ Examination, then either the AMC Clinical Examination or a Workplace-Based Assessment if you are already working in an eligible clinical role.

Pathway Snapshot

Complete EPIC credential verification, pass the AMC CAT MCQ at a Pearson VUE centre, meet the AHPRA English language standard, secure a supervised clinical position, and complete either the AMC Clinical OSCE or a Workplace-Based Assessment. After 12 months of supervised practice, apply for general registration with AHPRA.

Complete Journey: EPIC Credential Verification → AMC Portfolio & MCQ Authorisation → AMC CAT MCQ Examination → English Language Test → Secure Employment → AHPRA Limited Registration → AMC Clinical Exam or WBA → 12 Months Supervised Practice → AHPRA General Registration.

Credential Verification (EPIC / MyIntealth)

Primary Source Verification runs through ECFMG’s EPIC service via the MyIntealth portal — not ECFMG Certification, which is strictly for USMLE candidates. Selecting the wrong service at signup is a common and costly mistake.

Verification steps:

  1. Create a MyIntealth account and complete identity verification (including online notarization via NotaryCam). Your account is typically confirmed within 2 to 3 business days.
  2. Select EPIC as your service, not ECFMG Certification.
  3. Upload your Final Medical Diploma, Final Medical Transcript, or Alternate Graduation Document.
  4. Nominate the Australian Medical Council (AMC) as the official recipient of your EPIC Reports for each credential.
  5. ECFMG contacts your medical school directly to authenticate your credentials. This is the biggest source of delay and is outside your control.

If you have already been verified through ECFMG Certification or EICS for another purpose, those credentials carry over to your EPIC Portfolio at no extra cost, reviewed within about 10 business days rather than starting from scratch. ECFMG processes approximately 80% of credential verifications within 30 days and 90% within 90 days.

English Language Requirement (AHPRA)

English language standards are set by AHPRA, not the AMC, and are required before you apply under any pathway. Results are valid for 2 years from your test date. Which scores apply depends on your test date, not your application date. AHPRA also allows approved combinations of tests under its current English Language Skills Registration Standard.
