Canada for Surgeons
The RCPSC General Surgery certification follows a two-stage examination pathway. The Surgical Foundations exam is taken early in training, followed by the comprehensive final specialty exam in the final year of residency. The final exam includes both a written component and an applied oral component.
Pathway Snapshot
International surgeons enter via PER, where a minimum of 5 years of accredited surgical training is required. After credential approval, you must pass both the Surgical Foundations written exam and the final Certification Examination (written + oral) within the 5-year eligibility window. Full certification then requires a period of supervised practice.
Complete Journey: Medical Graduation → PER Application & Credential Evaluation → Eligibility Letter → Surgical Foundations Examination → RCPSC Certification Examination in General Surgery (Written + Oral) → Supervised Practice → Full Certification → Independent Specialist Practice.
For General Surgery, the minimum training requirement is 5 years of accredited specialty training. The PER application follows the same documentation and deadline structure as other specialties:

Timing: Typically at the end of PGY-1 or PGY-2, or early in the PER pathway.
Format: Written MCQ examination.
