UAE for Internal Medicine Specialists

NIHS — Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine specialists can qualify through Door 1 by passing the UAE licensing exam or by holding a Tier 1 qualification that grants exam exemption. For those entering UAE residency, the Emirati Board (NIHS) offers a structured training program with Part 1 at PGY-1/2 and a final Part 2 examination at the end of training. UAE residents can also earn dual certification with the Arab Board, which provides strong regional standing and supports specialist classification across many Arab League and GCC nations — though recognition varies by country and authority.

Pathway Snapshot

Door 1: DataFlow, licensing exam (or exemption), Eligibility Letter, and license activation. Door 2: Emirati Board residency with Part 1, Final Written, and Final Clinical. Dual Arab Board certification is available.

Door 2 — Emirati Board (NIHS) Residency

The Emirati Board Internal Medicine residency runs through a structured program. Residency exit and board exams evaluate candidate competency through written knowledge tests and clinical assessments (OSCE/SOE). Exact station counts, timing per station, and fee schedules vary by specialty and are managed internally through the NIHS examination office. Based on the best available information:

  • Part 1 Exam: Written MCQ at the end of PGY-1 or PGY-2. Maximum 3 attempts.
  • Final Written Exam: 150 Single Best Answer MCQs in the final year.
  • Final Clinical Exam: Combined OSCE and SOE stations assessing clinical reasoning, communication, procedural skills, and patient management.

Candidates should confirm current administrative fees directly through their NIHS portal profile.

UAE residents are dually enrolled in both the Emirati Board and the Arab Board. Arab Board certification provides strong regional standing and supports specialist classification across many Arab League and GCC nations. However, it does not guarantee automatic Tier 1 recognition or blanket exam exemptions in every jurisdiction, as each national authority evaluates credentials under local qualification bylaws. See our Arab Board page for full details.

After Certification

Emirati Board certification grants independent Specialist status across the UAE. While holding a valid license or specialty board from a GCC country facilitates professional mobility and credential evaluation, direct cross-border licensing reciprocity is not automatic. Applicants must still complete local DataFlow verification, satisfy ministry registration steps, and meet jurisdiction-specific licensing prerequisites set by the target country's regulator.
