The American Board of Surgery (ABS) certification follows a two-part pathway: the General Surgery Qualifying Examination (GSQE), a written MCQ exam, followed by the General Surgery Certifying Examination (GSCE), an in-person oral examination. Certification is pursued after completing a 5-year ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency.
Pathway Snapshot
Complete a 5-year ACGME General Surgery residency, pass the written GSQE (300 MCQs over 8 hours), then pass the oral GSCE (3 consecutive 30-minute sessions with senior examiners). Passing both grants ABS Diplomate status.

ABS Diplomate status is generally recognized as a Tier 1 qualification by GCC regulatory authorities, such as the UAE's DHA and Saudi Arabia's SCFHS. In practice, this commonly means exemption from the standard licensing exam and eligibility for Specialist or Consultant classification — but outcomes depend on the individual authority, the specialty, years of post-certification clinical experience, and standard credential verification (e.g., DataFlow, Good Standing Certificate). Candidates should confirm requirements directly with the relevant GCC authority before relying on Tier 1 status.
