Canada for Pediatricians
The RCPSC Certification Examination in Pediatrics consists of a written component followed by a separate applied oral examination. The written exam must be passed before the applied component is offered. International pediatricians typically qualify through the PER pathway.
Pathway Snapshot
After credential evaluation and an eligibility letter, you sit the written examination, then the applied structured oral examination. Passing both, combined with a period of supervised practice in Canada, leads to full RCPSC certification.
Complete Journey: Medical Graduation → PER Application & Credential Evaluation → Eligibility Letter → RCPSC Written Examination → RCPSC Applied Oral Examination → Supervised Practice → Full Certification → Independent Specialist Practice.
Internationally trained pediatricians must apply through the PER pathway. Minimum training requirement: 4 years of accredited specialty training in Pediatrics.
The required documentation and deadlines are identical to the Internal Medicine route — see that page for the full PER checklist. In summary:
The written component must be passed before the applied component is offered. Passing standards are set by the Royal College's criterion-referenced process.
Purpose: Evaluates broad clinical knowledge in pediatrics, from neonatology to adolescent medicine.
Timing: Final year of core pediatric training (PGY-3 or PGY-4) or after PER approval.
Format: Written examination consisting of multiple-choice papers. Third-party sources describe this as two papers of approximately 100 single-best-answer questions each; exact paper count and duration should be confirmed directly with royalcollege.ca.
Passing Standard: Determined by the Royal College's standard-setting process.
