DHP — General Surgery

General Surgery specialists qualify through the DHP Specialist Prometric Examination — a 150-MCQ computer-based test focusing on surgical vignettes and perioperative decision-making. Mandatory DataFlow PSV and credential evaluation apply. For Qatar-based residents, the QBMS offers a structured surgical training pathway with Part 1 and final examinations.

DHP Specialist Route Overview

Requirements: formal postgraduate surgical qualification, minimum 2–3 years of post-specialty clinical experience, valid Good Standing Certificate, and mandatory DataFlow PSV.

Attempts: Applicants can sit for the qualifying exam for 5 consecutive times, whatever the gap between each attempt. (Source: Official DHP Qualifying Examination Page, 2026. This policy supersedes previous regulations, including QCHP Circular No. 23/2015.)

DHP General Surgery Specialist Examination

Purpose: Assesses clinical surgical knowledge through vignettes covering trauma, emergency surgery, and perioperative management.

Format: 150 clinical vignette MCQs, single best answer.

Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes).

Passing Score: 65%.

Delivery: Prometric CBT centre (SCHQ2).

High-Yield Content Domains: Gastrointestinal Surgery, Emergency Abdominal Surgery, Surgical Trauma & Critical Care, Perioperative Management, Breast & Endocrine, and Postoperative Complications.

QBMS Track

The QBMS General Surgery program runs through a structured residency pathway. Program duration, PGY-level exam timing, and exact station format should be confirmed directly with QBMS. Based on the best available information:

  • Part 1: Surgical Principles Written MCQ, typically taken during the first half of residency.
  • Final Exam: Final Written plus Final Clinical Examination consisting of OSCE and SOE stations.

QBMS exam fees are sponsored for active HMC and Sidra residents. Retake fees: Part 1 ~QAR 500, Final Written ~QAR 1,000, Final Clinical ~QAR 1,500 (confirm with QBMS).

After Classification
